Man Purse on The Street:  Amit

Amit carries a surplus of FUN!

Name: Amit

Age: 26

Sign: Pisces

Occupation: Pediatrician (Resident at UCSF)

It was such a beautiful day, that first day of man purse hunting. The Haight was full of interesting and unusual men and the sun was shining. I saw Amit across the street, actually leaning against a post in an iconic fashion. My first impulse was to just photograph him in his natural lounging state, but being the overly formal person that I am, I was too shy to snap his photo before introducing myself.

What initially drew me to Amit was his turquoise sunglasses. They definitely make a statement. That statment might be something like - "I am out to have fun!" or "I love to play!" I didn't even notice his bag which, being an army surplus bag was effectively camoflauged by his khaki shorts. I ignored propriety and fully stared at Amit, even, craning my neck around and moving to get a better view of his side. As soon as I saw a couple of mini buttons peeking out from his hip, I knew I was in luck and had successfully hunted down another interesting man purse carrying man.

Regretfully, as soon as I made my way across the street and caught Amit's attention, he straightened up from the picturesque leaning position he had held. However, as I was now face to face with Amit, I was now even more pleased to see that in addition to his utilitarian army surplus messenger bag, he also carried some kind of folded flannel bundle. I hoped that I was actually spotting the ever-elusive man clutch, or 'Grip' as they are sometimes called. But Amit clarified that it was actually a cleverly designed picnic blanket, which folds up elegantly in an easy-to-carry manner.

Here are the details on Amit and his man purse:

  • Wallet
  • Camera
  • Food
  • Balderdash
  • iPod

Although Amit seems to be quite utilitarian (he refers to his man purse simply as "a bag") the presence of a deck of Balderdash cards shows me that he also clearly values fun, as I had first suspected. I will admit that this isn't the first deck of cards I've seen in a man-purse, but they are the first game set I've spotted.  Amit must have had a great Sunday afternoon, having his picnic, playing Balderdash, and lounging in the sunny Haight district of San Francisco.  He certainly brightened my up my day!
